What Did I Do?
I follow John Elworthy on Twitter as I rather enjoy his occasional quips and anecdotes there. After returning from my holiday I was catching up on my email, blog-reading and correspondence when I happened across his latest tweet:-
“Thank God, the X Factor is back. Not so happy Steve Tierney is back from holiday though. But Norwich won, so 2 out of 3 !”
I’m not quite sure whether to be offended or honoured to be one of Mr. Elworthy’s three things of note at that point in time (albeit the one that ruins his twitter-mood.) I am a little nonplussed though. What have I done to merit such extravagant positioning? I’m aware we’ve had a mild joust over the past couple of months between blog and newspaper, but I had thought it was all rather good-natured. Perhaps John is joking in his tweet? I’d feel better about it if there were a smiley
or something. I wouldn’t want to think I had somehow offended anybody. I think I’d rather miss his comments if he were away. Ah well. Sticks & stones and all that. ![]()
UPDATE (25th August)
All’s well that ends well. Apparently John Elworthy wasn’t being mean about me after all. His most recent tweet…
And just in case anyone needs re-assuring, I happen to believe Steve Tierney is the best thing to happen to local politics in years. I’m not sure the Conservative Party will necessarily end up thinking so, but how refreshing to hear someone who actually believes something. He’s wrong on the Queens Hotel, Wisbech, though - and common decency says the hostel must go ahead. But there are areas upon which we agree.
Thanks for that Mr. Elworthy. We may disagree on issues, but I wouldn’t want to have actually upset anybody. And I very much appreciate your (far too generous) comments.
Statistics
I’m pleased to say that my unique visitors (the number of different people who visit my blog) has stayed fairly steady. Not bad given that I was away and didn’t get to post last week! I still sit comfortably somewhere between 16,000 and 20,000 monthly visitors based on the combined weekly stats for August so far! Hopefully, the additional exposure from winning the Total Politics Blog Award will pull in more regular readers! It’s all very exciting. Thanks - everyone!

Well I always knew that Elworthy supported lost causes, but - Norwich City !

I met that chap Elworthy once- couldn’t stand the fellow. Bit shifty I thought. However having a drink in March Conservative Club at the weekend, I discovered I was in the minority. Seems they love him to bits. Apparently he drops in there occasionally but they say not so often of late and they miss him.
They say you should judge a man by the company he keeps so given the distinguished gathering who so admire his work, I’m assuming its me that in the minority.
Keep up the good work, Steve: your blog is the most perceptive of any its been my pleasure to read
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Response: I’ve never met him, but have no reason to think he’s anything other than very pleasant. I enjoy the Cambs Times and the column written by his “colleague” Breakespeare, even when it pokes fun at me. I’ve found him entertaining to cross swords with a little and have always expected I’ll lose, given his experience is far greater than mine as he has a newspaper to wield while I have a blog. : ) I honestly hope he was only joking and that he holds no animosity towards me. We may not agree politically, but there are plenty of people who don’t agree with my views (no shortage in fact) in all sorts of ways and I still have a respectful and amicable relationship with them.

I would not worry if he was joking or not. Theres nothing good to say about Elworthy or his worthless rag. Over all that homeless shelter business you came across as a sensible voice of reason. The paper came across as weak and snivelling. If only some of the district council would listen to what everybody is telling them instead of what Elworthy prints and pretends anybody agrees with. If that place gets the go ahead that’s the last time I ever vote tory. Dont worry, you aren’t my councillor so it wont hurt you.
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Response: I worry any time anybody thinks about not voting Conservative!! Please take a deep breath and reconsider! As you’ve seen there is a split of views on local issues like this and even if the final result is not to your liking the District Council is working hard for you in a great many ways and is full of dedicated councillors. Thank you for your kind comments about my blog. I rather like the local paper myself and certainly don’t think its a ‘worthless rag’. I’d agree its a little unbalanced sometimes, but I suspect a newspaper has to be controversial to keep its readership interested and I wouldn’t begrudge them that. They do always seem to allow both sides to be aired in their letters pages and so on, which seems fair enough.

Glad you said that David. I’ve voted conservative all my life but recently so much has been wrong in Wisbech that I have been considering not diong so again. I don’t think I am alone based on what my friends say over coffee. My councillor is Les Sims. Nice man and I’d hate to move my vote to UKIP but so often it seems the local tories (present company excepted Steve!!) don’t speak for me or my neighbours. Never commented on a bloggy thing before. I hope I have done this right. Took me ages to work out how to sign in. Keep up thegood work Steve. I read your blog every day now and if I didnt I think i’d have voted another way last June.
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Response: Thanks for taking the time to comment, Sally. Please don’t give up on us. Your councillor, Les Sims, is more than just a nice man - he’s a legend! I assure you many Conservative councillors at all levels share your views. If there’s something you feel let down over then write to your councillor and say so! We can’t address your worries if we don’t know what they are. If you think things are wrong in Wisbech - then let’s discuss it! Let’s work together to put them right.

hello. I started reading your blog about a month ago atfer following a link from cranmers site here. i live in Manea and was interested to see a nearbyish councillor writing something that was readable rather than snoozey. I like the way you sometimes write fluff stuff and sometimes write serious stuff. I dont know all the people you write about so the live links are helpful and im getting to know more of our local politicians thanks to your blog and its made me rethink how I might vote next time as I didnt vote conservative last time. So I’m just writing to say thanks and please dont go on holiday again too soon as it leaves me without anything to read.
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Response: Welcome to the blog and thanks for reading!

I think that David Banner is a bit hard on the Cambs Times. However when he ‘hulks out’ with “if only some of the District council would listen…” he’s spot on ! A more complacent bunch of smug, self-serving plonkers would be hard to imagine.
Shame Steve Tierney is only on the County Council and not the District. He’d wake them up ! Mind you, your next commentator, Selby, is fortunate to have as his District Councillor the sole independent not slavishly bound by a party whip which appears to put politics before the good of the district !
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Comment: I think you are being a bit hard on the District Council, Hugh. And given the plug for He-Who-Shall-Remain-Unnamed I suspect you are another (or the same) supporter of my Manea buddy and so a little … uh … biased? That’s okay though. Bias is allowed here. Its human nature.

I wish you would write again about this queens hotel business. I know you are scared to do so and ‘in the doghouse’. but you have said in the past you would not be silenced and you seem to have been silenced! Disappointing.
Im not a supporter of your party but I support you on this and you’ve seemed to be one of that rare breed, an honest conservative, from your past comments..
It seems that when big business want their way with your tory district council they will get it. It does not matter what we say. It does not matter what your committees decide.
Big business will just flash some money to put the plans in again and your friends at the top will force you all to do as they say. It makes me sick.
Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Comment: I’m not ’scared’ of a whole lot, Union Man. I’ve expressed my views, but this issue is a District issue and I am a county councillor. It is inappropriate for me to get into the politics of it any further and, to be quite frank, I’m somewhat torn over the issue anyway.

Looking at the unnamed person hugh was referring to and then my reference to that same unnamed person I’d think it not too tough to work out. I’ll give you a clue, his name rhymes with Park Larcher. : )
